Conference Topic – Edible Landscapes

Eric Garretson has spent most of his life in New Mexico and Washington State. During is early years he spent time working in the orchards of Washington, 2 summers at a kids camp in Colorado and one summer sampling the history and food of Europe. Upon his return he settled on Orcas Island, part of the San Juan Islands of Washington. On Orcas he became the Head Gardener at a summer camp. There he spent 10 years hiking, kayaking and working with the kids in the garden. He then traveled to Socorro County, New Mexico to be closer to family where he farmed and started an edible landscaping business, New Mexico Foodscapes. In 1997 he became the Director of the Downtown Growers’ Market in Albuquerque. While continuing the landscaping business he directed the Downtown Market for 10 years before moving to La Madera, NM where he farmed for 3 years and worked as a landscaper for 1 year at the Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs. He then spent 3 years as the Sustainability Coordinator at the Ghost Ranch Educational and Retreat Center just north of Abiquiu, New Mexico. He now resides in Albuquerque, NM where he teaches part time at Montessori 1 and has reopened his New Mexico Foodscapes business.
